Data
Title: Monsters
Year: 2010

I saw it: on video (rented from Netflix), yesterday
Synopsis: giant aliens inhabit a stretch of land between the US and Mexico

My reaction
Concept:4/4 (Great) Character-focussed indie science fiction? About giant aliens? I haven't been guaranteed to love a movie this much since Wall-E.
Story:2/4 (Indifferent) The overall plot outline is great. The execution of the details is terrible.
Characters:0/4 (Terrible) One of them has no observable qualities except the occasional need to stop and pee. The other is a douchebag. Both are maddeningly boring.
Dialog:0/4 (Terrible) Advice to budding filmmakers: don't let your dialog be improvised on the spot by a guy named Scoot.
Pacing:2/4 (Indifferent) Yes, it's boring, but that's not the fault of the pacing so much as the general horribleness.
Cinematography:3/4 (Good)
Special effects/design:4/4 (Great) The guy has no money or manpower, and his special effects are some of the best I've seen all year. Hollywood, what the fuck is wrong with you? Do you just hate your audiences?
Acting:1/4 (Bad) It doesn't help that they didn't have a writer.
Music:2/4 (Indifferent)
Subjective Rating: 3/10 (Bad, 1/4 (Bad)). Pretty much guaranteed to love it, and I hated it. So, so bad.
Objective Rating (Average):1.9/4 (Eh)
