The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, 2012. Dwarves and a hobbit go on a trip.

Directed by Peter Jackson. Written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Jackson & Guillermo del Toro, based on a book by J.R.R. Tolkien. Starring Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman & Richard Armitage.

Concept: 3/4 (Good)
Story: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 1/4 (Bad)
Pacing: 1/4 (Bad)
Cinematography: 1/4 (Bad). If you're filming in New Zealand and your movie looks like crap, you are doing something very wrong.
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 1/4 (Bad)
Subjective Rating: 4/10 (Eh, 2/4). Steaming pile of disappointment. The only thing at all enjoyable is the Gollum scene. Otherwise, it feels like watching someone play a video game based on a Hobbit movie.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.6/4 (Eh)

Conan the Destroyer

Conan the Destroyer, 1984. An evil queen sends some people on a quest.

Directed by Richard Fleischer. Written by Stanley Mann; story by Roy Thomas & Gerry Conway, based on a character by Robert E. Howard. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 1/4 (Bad)
Pacing: 3/4 (Good)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 3/4 (Good)
Acting: 1/4 (Bad)
Music: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Subjective Rating: 6/10 (Okay, 2/4). As a fantasy/adventure B movie, it's reasonably entertaining (if very badly written and acted). It is definitely not a Conan movie, though. A shirtless Arnold plus a sword does not equal Conan.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.8/4 (Eh)

A Sailor-Made Man

A Sailor-Made Man, 1921. A rich jackass joins the Navy.

Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer. Written by Hal Roach, Sam Taylor & Jean C. Havez, with H.M. Walker. Starring Harold Lloyd.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 2/4 (Indifferent). For the first 10-15 minutes, Harold's character is pretty funny, but then he suddenly changes into Generic Comedy Hero.
Dialog: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Pacing: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Subjective Rating: 6/10 (Okay, 2/4). It has its moments. There are some nice antics in the climax; antics are definitely Harold's strength. There's a long middle section that I could have mostly done without.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.9/4 (Eh)

Clueless

From my Bad 90s Movies marathon, part 5 of 8.

Clueless, 1995. A rich, popular girl tries to use her powers for good.

Written & directed by Amy Heckerling. Starring Alicia Silverstone.

Concept: 0/4 (Terrible)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 3/4 (Good)
Pacing: 3/4 (Good)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 3/4 (Good)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 3/4 (Good)
Subjective Rating: 6/10 (Okay, 2/4). Harmless. I imagine it would have been perceived differently in 1995 - so much about it was infused into popular culture, stuff that might have been quirky and a little weird back then just seems today like the 90s.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.0/4 (Indifferent)

"Knick Knack"

"Knick Knack" (short), 1989. A snowman tries to escape from a snowglobe.

Written & directed by John Lasseter.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: n/a
Pacing: 3/4 (Good)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 1/4 (Bad)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 4/4 (Great)
Subjective Rating: 6/10 (Okay, 2/4). Apart from its historical importance and the Bobby McFerrin music, it's pointless and forgettable.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.0/4 (Indifferent)

Doctor Who #53: The Ambassadors of Death

Doctor Who: "The Ambassadors of Death," 1970 (the third story of four from season seven). Astronauts returning from Mars are kidnapped as part of an elaborate conspiracy.

Created by Sydney Newman, C.E. Webber & Donald Wilson. Directed by Michael Ferguson. Written by David Whitaker, Malcolm Hulke & Trevor Ray. Starring Jon Pertwee, Caroline John & Nicholas Courtney.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 3/4 (Good)
Characters: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Dialog: 3/4 (Good)
Pacing: 2/4 (Indifferent). The pacing of the individual episodes is (usually) excellent. As a whole, though, it's a couple episodes too long.
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 2/4 (Indifferent). There's a lot of instrumental pop music, reminiscent of The Prisoner, which is great and suits this era of Doctor Who perfectly.  There's also, at one point, the worst incidental music (possibly the worst music, period) I've ever heard.
Subjective Rating: 7/10 (Good, 3/4). At its best, it's suspenseful and intelligent. At its worst, it's campy fun.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.3/4 (Okay)

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

From my Bad 90s Movies marathon, part 4 of 8.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, 1994. A jackass looks for a stolen dolphin.

Directed by Tom Shadyac. Written by Jack Bernstein, Shadyac & Jim Carrey; story by Bernstein. Starring Carrey.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 0/4 (Terrible)
Dialog: 0/4 (Terrible)
Pacing: 1/4 (Bad)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 1/4 (Bad)
Music: 1/4 (Bad)
Subjective Rating: 1/10 (Eew get it away, 0/4). Grating, hateful, and thoroughly unfunny. It goes through the surface motions of being a dumb comedy, but it feels like it's been engineered to demoralize the audience.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.0/4 (Bad)

"Never Weaken"

"Never Weaken" (short), 1921. A young romantic's suicide attempts are interrupted by a construction site.

Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer. Written by Hal Roach & Sam Taylor, with H.M. Walker. Starring Harold Lloyd.

Concept: 3/4 (Good)
Story: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Pacing: 3/4 (Good)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Subjective Rating: 6/10 (Okay, 2/4). Entertaining. It's about half comedy (of the we're-having-fun-but-not-actually-laughing variety), and about half stunts. Unfortunately, the two rarely coincide effectively.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.1/4 (Okay)

The Rocketeer

From my Bad 90s Movies marathon, part 3 of 8.

The Rocketeer, 1991. A 1930s pilot finds a jetpack.

Directed by Joe Johnston. Written by Danny Bilson & Paul De Meo; story by Bilson, De Meo & William Dear; based on a comic book by Dave Stevens. Starring Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly & Timothy Dalton.

Concept: 3/4 (Good)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 1/4 (Bad)
Pacing: 1/4 (Bad)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 3/4 (Good). Great design.
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 1/4 (Bad)
Subjective Rating: 3/10 (Bad, 1/4). Boring. It's a movie that attempts to do nothing but have fun, and it's not any fun. At all. Ever.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.6/4 (Eh)

City Slickers

From my Bad 90s Movies marathon, part 2 of 8.

City Slickers, 1991. Three New Yorkers go on a cattle drive.

Directed by Ron Underwood. Written by Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel. Starring Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern & Bruno Kirby.

Concept: 0/4 (Terrible)
Story: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Characters: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Dialog: 3/4 (Good)
Pacing: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 3/4 (Good)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 1/4 (Bad)
Subjective Rating: 5/10 (Indifferent, 2/4). Another bad 90s movie that's surprisingly painless to watch. (Hopefully that will hold out for the rest of the marathon.) It hits you over the head with a hammer to pound in its philosophy, but it's coming from a good place. And some of the humor works. Most of the more mediocre scenes can be greatly improved by imagining they feature Mike Wazowski instead of Generic Billy Crystal Character.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.9/4 (Eh)

"I Do"

"I Do" (short), 1921. A young couple babysits their nephews, then fears burglars.

Directed by Hal Roach. Written by Roach & Sam Taylor. Starring Harold Lloyd & Mildred Davis.

Concept: 0/4 (Terrible)
Story: 0/4 (Terrible). It's like they were bored with one premise halfway through (so was I), and decided to go with something else. Neither is any good.
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Pacing: 3/4 (Good)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)

Subjective Rating: 5/10 (Indifferent, 2/4). Not funny.

Argo

Argo, 2012. A fake movie production is used as a cover to extract Americans from Iran.

Directed by & starring Ben Affleck. Written by Chris Terrio, based on writings by Tony Mendez & Joshuah Bearman.

Concept: 3/4 (Good)
Story: 1/4 (Bad). For a scenario this novel, it's surprising how they managed to force it into a perfectly-predictable, paint-by-number movie script.
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 3/4 (Good)
Pacing: 4/4 (Great)
Cinematography: 3/4 (Good)
Special effects/design: 3/4 (Good)
Acting: 3/4 (Good)
Music: 3/4 (Good)
Subjective Rating: 7/10 (Good, 3/4). Its strong point, the suspense that everyone seems to love about it, didn't work for me. Nothing unexpected ever happens, and there's no attempt to make you care about the characters. It's a good movie, but I don't feel it does anything that a documentary wouldn't have done better.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.7/4 (Good)

Kindergarten Cop

From my Bad 90s Movies marathon, part 1 of 8.

Kindergarten Cop, 1990. An action hero goes undercover as a Kindergarten teacher.

Directed by Ivan Reitman. Written by Murray Salem, Herschel Weingrod & Timothy Harris; story by Salem. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Concept: 0/4 (Terrible)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)
Dialog: 1/4 (Bad)
Pacing: 3/4 (Good)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 1/4 (Bad). I've got to take a point off for Arnold's beard.
Acting: 1/4 (Bad)
Music: 1/4 (Bad)
Subjective Rating: 5/10 (Indifferent, 2/4). I'm ashamed to admit, it got a few good laughs out of me. There's something pleasantly absurd about it - not in the way the filmmakers were going for, but the absurdity that this sort of movie gets made, that a sizable amount of people felt this was the best use of their time and money, and that they might have been right. It's objectively terrible, but I almost enjoyed watching it (and I am decidedly not its target audience). Also, Arnold saying, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, this is my ferret," is... um... something that happens.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.3/4 (Bad)

The French Connection

From my Best Picture Marathon, part 6 of 6.

The French Connection, 1971. Two New York cops follow an unlikely drug smuggling lead.

Directed by William Friedkin. Written by Ernest Tidyman, based on a book by Robin Moore. Starring Gene Hackman, Fernando Rey & Roy Scheider.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Characters: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Dialog: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Pacing: 4/4 (Great)
Cinematography: 3/4 (Good)
Special effects/design: 3/4 (Good)
Acting: 3/4 (Good)
Music: 4/4 (Great)
Subjective Rating: 8/10 (Great, 4/4). Gripping and memorable. It doesn't amount to more than an action movie (albeit one of the best action movies ever made), which is a little surprising for a based-on-a-true-story Oscar winner - in a good way.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.9/4 (Good)

"Among Those Present"

"Among Those Present" (short), 1921. A boy impersonates an aristocrat at a fox hunt.

Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer. Written by Hal Roach & Sam Taylor, with H.M. Walker. Starring Harold Lloyd.

Concept: 3/4 (Good)

Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Music: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Subjective Rating: 6/10 (Okay, 2/4). Pretty entertaining. I might have enjoyed it more if it weren't for all of the animal abuse that I assume went into making it.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.0/4 (Indifferent)

Dances with Wolves

From my Best Picture Marathon, part 5 of 6.

Dances with Wolves, 1990. A Civil War era soldier befriends a Sioux tribe.

Directed by & starring Kevin Costner. Written by Michael Blake, based on his novel.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Characters: 3/4 (Good). Soooo much more could have been done with this character if he'd been played by an actor.
Dialog: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Pacing: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Cinematography: 3/4 (Good)
Special effects/design: 4/4 (Great)
Acting: 1/4 (Bad)
Music: 1/4 (Bad)
Subjective Rating: 5/10 (Indifferent, 2/4). I was expecting this to be much worse. Three hours of Kevin Costner in a story about historical injustice? But it turns out to be entirely watchable. They keep things quite morally complex, considering how preachy it would have been in the hands of a lot of filmmakers.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.2/4 (Okay)

Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 3/4 (Good)
Music: 3/4 (Good)
Subjective Rating: 7/10 (Good, 3/4). Not as funny as the first season. There are a handful of great episodes, and quite a few stretches of mediocre writing. But even at its worst it's still fun to watch, thanks to the cast.
Objective Rating (Average): 2.5/4 (Okay)

Breaking Bad: Season Four

Breaking Bad: Season Four, 2011. Everyone's favorite meth-cooking science teacher tries to kill his boss.

Created by Vince Gilligan. Directed by Michelle MacLaren (3 episodes), Gilligan (2), Adam Bernstein (1), David Slade (1), Colin Bucksey (1), Michael Slovis (1), Peter Gould (1), Johan Renck (1), Terry McDonough (1) & Scott Winant (1). Written by George Mastras (3 episodes), Sam Catlin (3), Moira Walley-Beckett (3), Thomas Schnauz (3), Gilligan (2), Gennifer Hutchison (2) & Peter Gould (2). Starring Bryan Cranston.

Concept: 3/4 (Good)
Story: 4/4 (Great)
Characters: 4/4 (Great)
Dialog: 3/4 (Good)
Pacing: 3/4 (Good)
Cinematography: 3/4 (Good)
Special effects/design: 4/4 (Great)
Acting: 4/4 (Great)
Music: 3/4 (Good)
Subjective Rating: 8/10 (Great, 4/4). It's basically one giant final act to season three's set-up, which is a change from previous seasons. This one's more focused on plot - a drawn-out thriller rather than a (primarily) character-driven drama. I'd say the change is an improvement, although it wouldn't have been half as good as it is if it didn't follow three seasons of ground-breaking, awesome character development.
Objective Rating (Average): 3.5/4 (Great)

"Daffy Duck for President"

"Daffy Duck for President" (short), 2004. Bugs Bunny teaches Daffy Duck about the branches of the US federal government.

Acting: 1/4 (Bad)
Music: 2/4 (Indifferent)

Doctor Who #72: Death to the Daleks

Doctor Who: Death to the Daleks, 1974 (the third story of five from season eleven). An ancient city drains the power from every ship that lands on its planet.

Created by Sydney Newman, C.E. Webber & Donald Wilson. Directed by Michael E. Briant. Written by Terry Nation. Starring Jon Pertwee & Elisabeth Sladen.

Concept: 3/4 (Good). Granted, it doesn't make any sense. How can Daleks move around at all when they don't have power? But a competent writer could have found a way around that.
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Dialog: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Pacing: 0/4 (Terrible)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)

Acting: 1/4 (Bad)
Music: 0/4 (Terrible)
Subjective Rating: 2/10 (Terrible, 0/4). Oh Terry Nation, you so awful. 100 minutes of show, and about 50 minutes of material. I mean, literally, you could film this exact script, with no edits, and come up with a 50-minute show that didn't feel rushed.

You Can't Take It with You

From my Best Picture Marathon, part 4 of 6.

You Can't Take It with You, 1938. A young couple is separated by class tensions between their families.

Directed by Frank Capra. Written by Robert Riskin, based on a play by George S. Kaufman & Moss Hart. Starring Lionel Barrymore, Jean Arthur & James Stewart.

Concept: 1/4 (Bad)
Story: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Characters: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Dialog: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Pacing: 1/4 (Bad)
Cinematography: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Special effects/design: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Acting: 3/4 (Good)
Music: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Subjective Rating: 4/10 (Eh, 2/4). Hollywood's version of being relevant to social issues: a story about a guy with so much money he can support a large family in luxury for decades, through the great depression, without working - and he's supposed to be the lower class half of the equation. What the serious fuck? Besides that, the movie's dull, poorly crafted, and desperate to seem zany. The only good parts are when it takes a break to be a Jimmy Stewart movie - but for the most part it isn't; it's a Lionel Barrymore Wants You To Know What's Wrong With You movie.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.9/4 (Eh)

A Beautiful Mind

From my Best Picture Marathon, part 3 of 6.

A Beautiful Mind, 2001. The life of a schizophrenic mathematician.

Directed by Ron Howard. Written by Akiva Goldsman, based on a book by Sylvia Nasar. Starring Russell Crowe.

Concept: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Story: 1/4 (Bad)
Characters: 1/4 (Bad)

Pacing: 2/4 (Indifferent)
Cinematography: 3/4 (Good)
Special effects/design: 3/4 (Good)
Acting: 3/4 (Good)
Music: 1/4 (Bad)
Subjective Rating: 3/10 (Bad, 1/4). The quintessential movie of it's type: heavy-handed Oscar bait. It tries desperately to pull emotional strings, but is so lacking in humanity that it never even succeeds in cheap manipulation. It's the cinematic equivalent of a suspended cymbal roll.
Objective Rating (Average): 1.8/4 (Eh)
